1. The Weather
We kind of have to start with the weather. San Diego gets sunshine and blue skies almost every day of the year, and the average daytime temperature is 70 degrees (seriously). In the winter, it can dip down to 40 degrees, but that just gives us an excuse to wear cute boots, scarves, and coats.
2. The Beaches
San Diego boasts over 70 miles of beaches. On any given day, the sun rises to the sight of surfers catching the morning waves and exercise junkies running on the sand or on the boardwalk. The rest of us are fine grabbing a little sun and a snooze on the sand. The perfect family or friend outing is a day of sand and waves.
3. The Big Attractions
We’ve got one of the best zoos in the entire world, as well as the Wild Animal Park, LEGOLAND, and Sea World. (Not to mention the fact that Disneyland, Universal Studios, and California Adventure are within driving distance.) Whether you’ve got kids or are a kid at heart, these destinations are unbeatable.
4. Museums
Itching to learn about history, see classic art, or learn about military life? San Diego is full of world-class museums, including the San Diego Museum of Art, the San Diego Natural History Museum, the San Diego Air & Space Museum, and the USS Midway, which is an actual retired aircraft carrier. Balboa Park, one of our iconic institutions, includes 13 unique museums all on its own!
5. Craft Beer
San Diego almost always makes the list of best craft brew cities in the U.S. for a reason. You can hardly walk down the street without stumbling across a new brewery offering an IPA that will make your taste buds dance. We are also home to some of the most iconic craft beers on the market, including Stone Brewery, Green Flash, and Carl Strauss.
6. Outdoor Activities Galore
San Diego is an outdoor adventure paradise. Step outside your door, and you can go for a run, hike up a mountain at Lake Poway, meet sea lions when you kayak La Jolla Cove, or try some outdoor mountain climbing.
7. Even More Outdoor Activities
Seriously, the options don’t end. Sign up for the San Diego Rock n’ Roll Marathon. Take a swing on the Torrey Pines Golf Course, home of the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open. Cycle from Coronado to Oceanside and then take the train back down.
8. Arts and Crafts
If you’re a fan of the arts, San Diego will keep you enthralled. The San Diego Symphony and the San Diego Opera offer shows throughout the year. Top Broadway performances regularly stop in, and we’re home to two Tony Award winning theaters – the Old Globe Theater and the La Jolla Playhouse.
9. Music to Our Ears
Besides the symphony and the opera, San Diego is filled with great little music joints that host your favorite indie bands as well as up-and-coming performers. Two of our favorites are the Belly Up and the House of Blues.
10. Professional Sports
Okay, so the Padres aren’t the best baseball team in the league, but Petco Park is a gorgeous stadium. You can also check out the San Diego Gulls, our American League hockey team, and our San Diego State Aztecs NCAA Division 1 football team. (The truth is that most of us are too busy staying active ourselves to sit around watching other people play sports.)
11. Amazing Food
The Gaslamp is just one area where you can find excellent culinary concoctions. San Diego offers something for everyone’s taste. We’ve got fine dining, every type of ethnic cuisine, and endless hole-in-the-wall options where you’ll eat like a royalty without paying a king’s ransom. Our proximity to the Mexican border means that our Mexican food is as authentic as it gets.
12. Pulsing Nightlife
You might be surprised at how well San Diego knows how to party. Head downtown on a Friday night to the Gaslamp, and you’ll see all our beautiful people decked out in skinny jeans and crazy tall stilettos as they head to the pounding clubs. If moshing isn’t your thing, trying sipping some great wine at a chill wine bar or grabbing some laughs at one of our comedy clubs.
13. Speaking of Wine…
Temecula is Southern California’s version of Napa Valley and offers dozens of amazing wineries and gorgeous vineyards for your sipping and visual pleasure. Okay, so Temecula isn’t technically in San Diego (it’s in Riverside County), but it’s right next door, and definitely worth the trip for any dedicated vino connoisseur.
14. Huge Events
There’s a huge event taking place in San Diego almost every week, thanks to our large convention center right on the bay. No matter what time of year it is, you can always find something going on. Some of our biggest events are the San Diego Fair, opening day at the Del Mar Racetrack, and – of course – the original Comic-Con. Our city goes a little crazy for Comic-Con; our streets are filled with heroes and your fav TV, movie, comic, and video game characters for an entire weekend!
15. Everything Else
There’s just so many San Diego wonders that we haven’t even been able to touch on, like the awesome farmer’s markets in every town, the superb Balboa Park, the fact that you can literally hit the beach and the ski slopes on the same day.
